Early Warning Signs of Non Small Cell Lung Cancer

Non small cell lung cancer (or NSCLC) is among the prevalent forms of lung cancer, encompassing almost 85% of lung cancer cases, according to statistics from the American Cancer Society. Non small cell lung cancer occurs when healthy cells experience unprecedented and abnormal growth, as a result tumors form and risk spreading to other areas of the body.

Further research from the American Cancer Society suggests that non-small cell lung cancer affects men and women equally, accounting for 121,680 new diagnosis in men and 112,350 new diagnosis in women yearly, and claiming roughly 154,050 deaths annually.

The symptoms of small cell lung cancer and non small cell lung cancer can often be quite similar, however, proper diagnosis will determine the proper treatment option for NSCLC:

1. Paraneoplastic Syndrome
One of the most telltale early warning symptoms of NSCLC is paraneoplastic syndrome, which causes hormone-like substances to infiltrate the bloodstream. These substances often lead to increased calcium levels and abnormal bone growth. Paraneoplastic syndrome also raises the risk of blood clots.

2. Fatigue

Any chronic health condition taking up residence in your body will make you feel tired all time time. Non-small cell lung cancer is no different, as patients report unexplained fatigue, weight loss, and appetite loss.

3. Persistent cough
A cough is considered a common sign of a cold or respiratory infection, however, a lingering cough that gets worse instead of better with time and treatment can be a sign of NSCLC. Particularly, if your cough is producing bloody mucus, see a doctor immediately.

4. Clubbing of the toes and fingers

Clubbing of the fingers and toes is typically synonymous with cardiovascular cancers. However, non small cell lung cancer also causing club-like appearance to fingers and toes when blood flow increases and blood becomes pooled at these extremities.

5. Neurological issues
Cancers like non-small cell lung cancer can often metastasize and spread to other areas of the body, including the brain. This is why NSCLC can cause neurological problems, including random headaches, memory loss, and seizures.

6. Chest pain and respiratory issues

NSCLC takes residence in the lungs, which often leads to chest pain, in addition to breathing difficulties (i.e., wheezing), and eating troubles (i.e., difficulty swallowing), and changes in voice and heartbeat (irregularities).

7. Weight loss
Sudden and unexplained weight loss should always be of grave concern, especially when the patient hasn’t changed their diet or exercise routine. Weight loss can indicate an underlying health issue, such as NSCLC.
